Wanted: 3D artists

A group of Auckland Game Works members are embarking on a new game project - and are looking for 3D models, assets, textures and creative partners for the project.

The basic concept is to create a console-style adventure platformer for the PC, with some neat weapons, multi-character plotlines, and a diverse set of lands and creatures.  We have the programming, graphics engine, design and storyline teams in place, but there is an opportunity for artists to get involved from the initial design phase too.

The plot allows for lots of varied locations, creatures and cultures, so we think different art styles (maybe even existing artwork) could be adapted for the game.

If you're interested email Stephen or come along to our next meeting.

The Kiwi's Tale results at the Retro Remakes 2008 Competition

Our first publically relased game, The Kiwi's Tale, received second place in it's competition category (Sequels that Weren't). The final placing of the games is still to be published.

Although the reviews it recevied from the judges were mixed, we are pleased with the result and the lessons we have learned will be used to create improved games in the future.

We plan to issue an update after the Retro Remakes Competition judging with a few more tweaks and levels, so check back in Feb 09.

The New Zealand Story Tribute

At today’s Meetup we discussed the idea of entering the RetroRemakes competition starting on 1 Sept and the idea of a New Zealand-based team doing entering a tribute to the 1998 arcarde game ‘The New Zealand Story’was mooted.  The NZ Story was one of those awesome, incredibly cute, cleverly playable platform games that Taito came out with in the late 80s (along with Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, etc).  However, it was obviously put together by a Japanese tourist to New Zealand who instead of subjecting his family to a slideshow of his trip, decided to make a computer gam

Derelict goes Gold!

One of our members Erik Hogan has just completed a full game (with some help from friends of course). Derelict is a 3D real-time tactical strategy game where you control a team of space marines uncovering the alien menace on a space station.

New venue: RvB on K’Rd

We’re moving again to a more computer-game themed venue: a new gaming lounge downstairs on K’Rd called RvB. (geddit, Halo fans?).  We’ll be meeting in the bar area, although not necessarily drinking at 12noon on a Sunday.

And if anyone wants they can hang around to play on RvB’s copious range of consoles and games.

Here’s a roundup of some of the projects our members are currently working on:
